Trump Visits Barrington Middle School
In a brief town hall visit, potential republican presidential candidate Donald Trump told a crowd that leadership was desperately needed to make the country great again.
“Our country is in trouble,” he said. The U.S. economy continues to fall behind, and leadership was his answer to what he sees as the country's troubles.
Other countries like China, Japan and Mexico are stealing jobs from the U.S., he said.
“Everybody is beating us. We’re like a whipping post,” he said. “It has to change and it has to change quickly or we won’t have a country left.”
The U.S. loses when it negotiates anything, he said, from foreign policy to fiscal policy to trade policy. He faulted politicians in power for their failure at successful negotiations.
A student asked Trump what he would do with terrorist groups around the world. “I don’t want them to know what I’m going to do,” he said. He likened it to military strategy — you don’t tell your enemies what you plan to do. You just do it.
Trump was well received by the crowd of about 120 people who gave him a standing ovation when he finished his 20-minute talk.
“I’ve always liked Donald Trump. He tells it like it is,” said Laura Ryder of Nottingham. “I think he can change the economy around for the better.” Dover resident David Martin has seen four different candidates already this presidential cycle. While he hasn’t committed to a candidate yet, he said he liked Trump’s message. “He seems to have a good grasp on foreign policy,” he said. “He’s paid attention to what’s going on in Washington. He’s not just talking.”
